Instagram Follower Notifications: Get Alerts for Any Profile (2026)
Guide to Instagram follower notifications: what Instagram alerts you about, what it never will, and how to get alerts when any public profile follows someone.

Instagram sends you notifications about your own account only: someone followed you, liked your post, mentioned you, sent you a message. It never notifies you when another person follows a new account, gains followers, or unfollows someone. If that is what you want, you need a tool that watches the profile for you.
The good news is that for public profiles this is straightforward. A follow tracker like The Ick checks a profile every hour and sends a push notification the moment a new follow, unfollow, or follower change is detected. No Instagram login, nothing visible to the person being tracked.
This guide covers what Instagram's own notifications do and don't include, how to set up alerts for any public profile step by step, what the alerts look like, and how to fix the most common reasons notifications don't arrive.
What Instagram's built-in notifications cover
Instagram's notification settings (Settings, then Notifications) let you toggle alerts for activity that involves your account:
- New followers and accepted follow requests
- Likes and comments on your posts
- Mentions and tags
- Direct messages and message requests
- Live videos and new posts from accounts you turned notifications on for
- Reminders and product updates
You can also turn on post and story notifications for specific accounts by tapping the bell icon on their profile. That tells you when they publish, not who they follow.
What Instagram will never notify you about
- When someone you follow starts following a new account
- When someone unfollows another account
- When a profile gains or loses followers
- When someone follows back, or stops following, a specific person
- Anything involving accounts you don't interact with directly
None of these are settings you've missed. Instagram removed the last feature that came close, the Following activity tab, back in 2019. We explain the background in why Instagram removed the following activity tab.
How follower notifications for other profiles work
Because Instagram won't do it, a third-party tracker has to. The mechanism is simple:
- The tracker records a public profile's following list, follower list and counts.
- On a schedule, it fetches the same data again.
- It compares the two snapshots. Any account that appeared or disappeared is a follow, unfollow, new follower or lost follower.
- It saves the change with a timestamp and sends you a notification.
The important variables are the check frequency and what the tool actually records. A tracker that only stores counts can tell you "following went from 412 to 413" but not who. A tracker that stores the lists can tell you the exact account. Frequency matters because a follow that is undone before the next check is invisible; hourly checks catch far more than daily ones. Set up notifications for any public profile with The Ick
Step 1: search the profile
Go to theick.io and type the Instagram username into the search box. You'll see the profile's follower and following counts and the accounts it follows. Double-check the profile picture and bio to make sure it's the right account. There is no Instagram login at any point.
Step 2: subscribe to keep tracking
The analysis shows you where things stand today. To keep monitoring, subscribe. Weekly and yearly plans are on the pricing page; in the US it's 8.99 USD per week or 34.99 USD per year, lower in many countries, cancel anytime, paid by card, Apple Pay or Google Pay.
Step 3: allow push notifications
When prompted, allow notifications. This is the step most people miss.
- On the web app (any phone or desktop): accept the browser's notification permission. On iPhone, open theick.io in Safari, add it to the home screen, then open it from the home screen icon and allow notifications. The Ick is not currently on the Apple App Store, so the home screen web app is the iPhone route.
- On Android: install the app from Google Play and allow notifications when asked, or use the web app in Chrome.
Step 4: add up to 5 profiles
Each subscription tracks up to 5 public profiles. Add the others from the dashboard. Every profile is checked every hour and each one generates its own alerts.
Step 5: read the feed
Notifications tell you something changed. The dashboard feed shows everything: the exact accounts followed or unfollowed, who followed or stopped following the profile, count changes and a history timeline. There is also a gender breakdown of the accounts the profile follows.
What the notifications look like
Alerts are short and specific. Depending on what changed, you'll see the equivalent of:
- A tracked profile started following a new account
- A tracked profile unfollowed an account
- Someone new started following a tracked profile
- Someone stopped following a tracked profile
- The follower or following count moved
Tapping the notification opens the profile in The Ick with the change highlighted. The recent follow tracker, unfollow tracker and follower count tracker pages describe each type of event.
Instagram alerts vs tracker alerts
| Instagram notifications | The Ick notifications | |
|---|---|---|
| Someone follows you | Yes | Yes, if you track your own public profile |
| Someone unfollows you | No | Yes |
| Someone else follows a new account | No | Yes |
| Someone else unfollows an account | No | Yes |
| Another profile gains or loses followers | No | Yes |
| Works on private profiles | Your own only | No |
| Check frequency | Real time, own account only | Every hour |
| Login required | Your Instagram account | None |
Why a notification might not arrive
Permission not granted. Check your device's notification settings for the app or for the site in your browser. On iPhone, the web app must be launched from the home screen icon to receive push notifications.
The account went private. Trackers read public data only. If the profile switches to private, there is nothing to compare and alerts stop. See can you track a private Instagram account.
The follow was undone quickly. A follow and unfollow that both happen between two hourly checks leaves no trace to detect. Hourly checks keep this window small, but it isn't zero.
Username changed. If the person changes their handle, the tracker follows the account itself, but confirm the profile still shows correctly in your dashboard.
Do Not Disturb or battery settings. Focus modes and aggressive battery savers on Android can delay or suppress push notifications from any app.
Is this visible to the person?
No. A tracker doesn't follow, like, view stories, or send requests. It reads the profile the same way anyone opening the page would. Instagram has no event to notify them about. If you're worried about this, we go through what Instagram does and doesn't reveal in does Instagram notify when you look at someone's following list and how to see who someone follows without them knowing.
Your own account is never involved either, because there is no login. That's a meaningful difference from "unfollowers" apps that require your credentials.
Tips for getting the most out of alerts
- Track the right profiles. Five slots go fast. Prioritise the accounts you actually want alerts for.
- Don't rely on notifications alone. Open the feed periodically; it holds the full history, and notifications are only the headline.
- Watch both directions. New followers of a profile can be as telling as new follows by it.
- Give it a few weeks. Some people follow accounts in bursts. Patterns show up over time on the history timeline.
- Check the count timeline. A flat following count can still hide a follow plus an unfollow. The feed shows both.
Getting started
Type a username on the home page, review the analysis, subscribe, and allow notifications. From then on, when the profile follows someone new, you'll know within the hour. If you're comparing options first, our guide to the best Instagram follower tracker apps explains what to look for.
Frequently asked questions
Does Instagram notify you when someone else follows a new account?
No. Instagram only sends notifications about activity on your own account, such as new followers, likes, comments and mentions. It never alerts you when another person follows or unfollows someone.
How can I get notified when someone follows a new account on Instagram?
Use a follow tracker that monitors a public profile on a schedule and pushes an alert when the following list changes. The Ick checks each tracked profile every hour and sends a push notification for new follows and unfollows.
Can I get notifications for a private Instagram account?
No. Trackers can only read publicly available data. If the account is private, its following and follower lists are hidden from anyone who is not an approved follower, so there is nothing to monitor.
Will the person know I set up notifications on their profile?
No. A tracker reads the same public data anyone can see when they open the profile. It does not follow, like, view stories or interact with the account, so Instagram has nothing to notify them about.
Why did I not get a notification for a follow I know happened?
Check that push notifications are allowed for the app or site in your device settings, that the profile is still public, and that the follow was not undone before the next hourly check. Very short-lived follows that happen between two checks can be missed.
Can I get notified when someone's follower count drops?
Yes, with a tracker. Instagram does not alert you to count changes on other profiles, but a tool that records the counts every hour can flag gains and losses and show them on a timeline.
See who they follow on Instagram
Type any public Instagram username to see who they follow, then get notified every time they follow someone new.
